β-Substituted carbazones derivatives of α-oximinoacetoacetarylamides are reported to be good chelating agents and used as analytical reagents for Spectrophotometric determination of metal ions. In this work, the α-oximinoacetoacetanilide thiosemicarbazone (HINATSC) was used as an analytical reagent for the extractive Spectrophotometric determination of cobalt(II). The optimum extraction condition was evaluated, by studying parameters like pH, time, reagent concentration and stability of complex etc. HINATSC gives an orange coloured complex with Co(II) and quantitatively extracted in to n-butanol at 6.8 ≤pH ≤7.8. The absorption spectrum of Co(II)-HINATSC complex shows maxima at 355 nm and obeys Beer's law was in the range of 0.2-3.0 ppm. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity were 9.358x10~3 dm~3 mol~(-1) cm~(-1) and 0.006 μg mL~(-1) cm~(-2) respectively. The composition of Co(II):HINATSC complex was determined by Job's continuous variation and Mole ratio methods. The standard deviation and variation from mean at 95% confidence limit were 0.173 and 19.97+-0.12 respectively. The effects of diverse ions have been studied. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive and precise and has been applied for the determination of cobalt in synthetic mixtures and real samples.
