Isonitrosobenzoylacetone Salicyloylhydrazone (HINBASH) is proposed as an analytical reagent for the extractive Spectrophotometric determination of trace amount of nickel. The optimum extraction conditions were evaluated by studying various parameters like pH, solvent, reagent concentration, equilibration time and stability of extracted complex. The reagent, HINBASH reacts with Ni(II) to give yellow coloured complex which is quantitatively extracted into benzene in the pH range of 7 - 8. The absorption spectrum of the complex shows maxima at 380 nm, whereas absorption due to reagent is negligible. The system obeys Beer's law in the concentration range of 0.06 - 2.80 ppm. The molar absorption and Sandell's sensitivity of extracted species is 2.5020 X 10 dm~3 Mol~(-1)cm~(-1) and 2.3737 ng mL~(-1) cm~(-2) respectively. The stoichiometry of the extracted complex Ni(II) : HINBASH is found to be 1:2. The variation from mean at 95% confidence limit is 9.98+- 0.08. Interference due to ions associated with Ni(II) has been studied. The method is rapid, sensitive, and reproducible and has been applied for the determination of nickel in synthetic mixture and real samples.
