Advances in Chromatography and Detectors as Applied to RCRA and SUPERFUND Site Projects

Advances in chromatography and detectors are having a great impact on the investigation and remediation of RCRA and SUPERFUND Sites. These advances have influenced the amount of samples collected and evaluated at sites. When used in screening modes more sample data points are collected and evaluated leading to the more precise selection of confirmation points. Some advances discussed in the paper are: ? FAST GC and reporting in the Contract Lab Program ? High speed chromatography – separation and identification vs. sample thru put ? Improvements with Traditional Detectors ? New Detectors for Site Specific Analyses Examples of the various improvements in analytical techniques required to determine contaminates present in soil, water and air samples are presented. Enhancements achieved by the implementation of these technologies are discussed. A comparison of analytical techniques and analytical approaches based upon the enhancements to chromatography and detectors are discussed. Impact to project cost, Data Quality Objectives, Stakeholder Interest and sound science are reviewed and expounded.
