The method involves determining advance of an ignition to be applied according to a maximum advance value mechanical resistance (2) of an engine and a maximum rattling advance value (1). The ignition advance to be applied is provided as a minimal value between the maximum mechanical resistance advance value and a determined advance value starting from the maximum rattling advance value, where the determined advance value is a maximum value between a minimal ignition advance value and another determined advance value starting from the maximum rattling advance value.
