Using EPA TO-15 SIM for Volatile Organic Compound Analysis around Hazardous Waste Sites.

The paper describes the application of EPA Method TO-15 and the TO-15 Supplement with selected ion monitoring (SIM) to achieve method detection limits (MDL’s) of 1 pptv or less for a series of VOC compounds. The method has also been used for the 40 compound TO-14 target list with MDL’s ranging from 2 to 8 pptv. Data is presented on the application of this method for air monitoring around Hazardous Waste Sites in California. Samples were collected in 6 liter SUMMA canister with an integral flow controller that is cleaned and blanked for the target VOC compounds at the 3 pptv level. The analysis was done using procedures described in the latest TO-15 Supplement (November 2002),. An MDL study is presented and QC criteria presented for the 40 target compounds. Actual field data will be presented showing how this method can be used for air monitoring, vapor intrusion, and risk assessment
