There are two important elements missing in routing proposals for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs), a theoretical framework on which the routing mechanisms are designed and performance analysis. The reason for is the complexity of MANETs. In this paper, we take a shot at these issue. We provide a theoretical framework on which routing mechanisms can be designed and judged based on the idiosyncrasies of MANETs, such as, station mobility, residual battery life, topological changes and propagation loss. We derive a metric that can be applied to various routes obtained during the route discovery phase of routing protocols. By making simple but realistic assumptions about various stochastic parameters, we demonstrate the effect of factors such as mobility, receiver sensitivity, propagation loss and battery condition. The results of this work can be used to design routing protocols resilient to unpredictability of user, station and channel. Such protocols are especially needed for high-volume data systems that divide processing power between operating system, application and communications (such as in grid computing environment).
