The notion of a virtual factory was introduced in 1994. The virtual factory (VF) is a system of software models and applications that operates a physical factory. It supports highly specialized, concurrent and distributed problem-solving and decision-making about resource allocation and process management, facility and process optimization from interrelated models, involving both human personnel and computers. The implementation and operation of VFs pose significant challenges, as distributed, concurrent architectures on heterogeneous operating and hardware platforms from many different vendors are involved. Object-oriented software frameworks provide the fundamentals for highly reliable, robust and reusable modules that can rapidly adapted to changing application needs. This led to a common shared framework for models of distributed systems, where objects and processes are primitives for the representation of the model. Problems of process combination were considered in our previous publications. Different aspects of process transformations for this general object-oriented model of the VF are considered in this paper. Examples illustrating the approach are included Based on these results, a specialized software toolset, the PROCESS BUILDER, was developed. It provides a practical approach to the development of process management for distributed systems with particular emphasis on their optimization and combination.
