Two-dimensional modeling has been employed in most currently available pre-processor for the structural analysis. It is not suitable for those complicated structures that are irregular in their shape, and the conflict parts of structural components cannot be easily discovered by manual examinations before construction. In this paper, a new method for the three-dimensional modeling of complicated structures in a virtual reality environment is presented. By employment of this method, users can specify beams, columns and other components in a three-dimensional space as if they are being constructed in the real world. Joints of components will be visible to users, and the clashed parts of components can be located in the virtual world. The solutions on modeling of complicated structures in a virtual reality environment are illustrated. Principles of computer-aided intersection testing of structural components in a virtual reality environment are also presented.
