Rural Road Construction in a Cold Region

This paper considers issue of rural road construction on peat soils that are a common problem in a cold region. Investigations were performed in the field using a concrete plate, 3m long by 1m wide by 0.15m thick, and applying static and dynamic loadings. A special self-recorder was designed to measure resilient dynamically induced deformation of soil foundation in situ. Based upon the conducted research, a special construction of pavement of prefabricated reinforced concrete plates was proposed for use on peat soils in rural areas. The prefabricated reinforced concrete plates are laid in lines of wheel alignments where they work independently, with only the mutual joint bearing between adjacent plates. This paper shows the main research results done to study behavior of built roads on peat and prepared sand over peat in a cold region.
