The heavy tamping method produces a heavily compacted bulb shaped soil mass beneath the tamping hole. This compacted soil mass will be used as a shallow foundation and bearing tests have been conducted. In the process oftamping and conducting the bearing test, the centrifuge flight was stopped to replace the tamping device with the loading device. This stopping during the test procedure may result in the release of the tamping induced inner stress due to the reduction of confining selfweight of the surrounding soil. In this paper, the effect of the stress release on the bearing characteristics was investigated by comparing the test results with and without stopping the centrifuge flight. The test results show that the effect of stress release for sandy soils were not significant.
