New Limits on CP Violation from a Search for a Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of ~(199)Hg

We report the results of a recently completed search for a permanent electric dipole moment of ~(199)Hg. The experiment gives d(~(199)Hg) = -(1.06 ± 0.49 ± 0.40) * 10~(-28) e cm, which we interpret as an upper limit |d(~(199)Hg)| < 2.1 * 10~(-28) e cm (95% C.L.). This result represents a factor of 4 improvement over the previous limit and sets new constraints on several CP-violating parameters. In particular, when combined with recent QCD calculations, it now gives the best limit on |θ_(QCD)| < 1.5 * 10~(-10). It also sets a new constraint on chromo-EDMs of the quarks, reducing the range of allowed CP-violating parameters in Supersymmetric models.
