Steady growth of air traffic requires an application of new surveillance technologies to ensure flight safety and effectiveness. The current surveillance concepts are based on two major types of surveillance that is Independent (Primary Surveillance Radar) and Co-operative Independent (Secondary Surveillance Radar -SSR, Multilateration Systems). The latest trends show that despite of upcoming Automatic Dependent Surveillance the Co-operative Independent Surveillance remains the most important source of position and identification data in the future. Mode S Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) has become a standard equipment of ATC modernization trends. Beside the Secondary Surveillance Radar a multilateration technology shows to be very prospective for ATC in various surveillance tasks. At present time the up-to-date mid-range and long-range multilateration systems bring to users quality comparable to existing Secondary Surveillance Radar. Such surveillance equipment can serve as supplements to them and in addition to this they bring a lot of benefits from different point of view. In the existing European airspace there are still remaining a lot of areas, which are not covered by any surveillance radar. Adding more MSSR cannot solve this shortage. Aircraft transponders suffer from density of interrogation and their circuits are overloaded. The last trends do not recommend installation of any new source of interrogation within the European airspace and authorities are looking for a solution.
