Various organophosphate based salts have been developed as high performance nucleators for polypropylene to improve both the optical and mechanical properties of the polymer and therefore articles, especially durable ones, produced from such formulated polypropylene grades. In this paper, a novel organophosphate based nucleator was investigated in polypropylene in detail. Its performance in impact polypropylene, especially physical and mechanical properties such as crystallization temperature, flexural modulus and stiffness-impact balance as well as heat deflection temperature were compared with conventional nucleators. In addition, the effect of nucleators on morphology of impact polypropylene was investigated to account for the reinforcing mechanism. This mechanism was found to be different from any conventional nucleator types and resulted in superior performance in flexural modulus and heat deflection temperature of impact polypropylene.
