About 110 million landmines are scattered in 64 countries around the globe. These mines present a major economic and environmental problem, as they prevent the area from being used for industrial and agricultural purposes. State of the art mine detection is essentially based on hand-held Metal Detectors (MDs). For clearing large areas, vehicular mine detection systems can be used. Due to military and urban metal remnants, such as shrapnel, ammunition, nails, and others, a great number of "false alarms" is caused. Target discrimination supported by sensor technologies like Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and biosensors will contribute to reduce the number of false alarms in the near future. The present paper gives an overview of different MD technologies. A high-sensitive pulse inductive eddy currents measurement will be presented. The influence of ferrous ground materials on the signal and target will be discussed. Measurement results will be presented for test samples and different ground materials based on mathematical modelling.
