Examination of recently enacted and impending legislative changes to environmentally considerate electrical and electronic products shows that companies are already using alternative materials and are already marketing products. Specifically, lead-free solders and halogen-free flame retardants are material changes driven by a variety of factors including legislation. Consumers have become more aware of environmental issues and the role of industries in environmental health and well being. The combination of increased regulation and heightened consumer awareness has become an important consideration for electronics manufacturers. It is crucial for manufacturers to understand impending environmental legislation and directives in the United States, the European Union (EU), and Japan, and to assess their effects on the electronics industry.
