The task I have been given here by the organizers of this Symposium is to look beyond conventional biological control into the future, and particularly to the role which biologically-based technologies (BBTs) will play, If conventional biological control is the way in which we do biological control today, then I suggest that it has the following elements: classical biological control for certain kinds of exotic pests, and particularly where scale of infestation makes chemical control uneconomical biopesticides as niche products to substitute for undesirable or ineffective chemical products augmented predators and parasitoids for horticulture and protected crops cultural control methods to conserve natural enemies I believe that biological control tomorrow will look rather different from this. Further, BBTs will be key features of this change. They will include the future form of some of the approaches we see above, like classical biological control and biopesticides, and some new ideas, like biotechnology, In this paper, I will first look at the future of IPM, as the framework for tomorrow's BBTs. Then I will look in more depth at three of these BBTs: biopesticides, biotechnology and classical biological control, and examine how they may change and evolve, Finally, I explore how BBTs will fit into, and even drive, development and implementation of new IPM systems.
