A Pragmatic View of Some Important Transmission Line Design Issues

This paper has been divided into two sections, both of which focus on transmission line design issues as they affect the everyday practice of line design and engineering. The sections are not comprehensive but highlight items that can and should be applied to the practice and science of line design. The first section is a reflective overview of the industry's attempts to designate loads using a probabilistic approach. Probabilistic based selection of loading criteria is one of the major issues that has dominated discussion of transmission line engineering for almost four decades. The second section offers a brief discussion of High Intensity Winds, Tension/Mass, Failure Investigations, Failure Containment and Focused Maintenance, five diverse topics found in the everyday practice of line design. The focus within these discussions will be on some very pragmatic issues that position our field of work as we look forward to this new era in transmission line engineering.
