Distributed Biomedical Simulations: The Application of the HLA for Cardiac and Cardiovascular Simulation Integration

A US Department of Defense simulation technology known as the High Level Architecture was used to build a distributed biomedical simulation for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. As this is one of the first biomedical research oriented uses of HLA, we examine the applicability of this technology to the field in general and to the integrated human function research effort of the NSBRI in particular. Next, we detail the application of the Federation Development and Execution Process to the design and implementation of the Cardiovascular Ventricular System Federation, focusing on the conversion of legacy medical simulations to HLA federates. This system of simulations integrates a human cardiovascular system model with detailed simulations of the electrical-mechanical behavior of the left and right ventricles allowing the novel examination of the human cardiovascular system's response and the hemodynamic consequences to cardiac rhythm disturbances. Finally, we discuss our plans to migrate the federation to an IEEE 1516 compliant RTI and to extend this effort to simulating an exercise study.
