The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) contains one of the largest subsurface disposal facilities for plutonium-con-taminated waste. This waste resides in the 144,100 m2 Subsurface Disposal Area (SDA) within the Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC) and was placed in unlined pits, soil vaults and trenches in surficial sediments. The INEEL waste burial site is underlain by undulating basaltic lava flows containing interbedded fluvial, lacustrine and eolian deposits of clay, silt, gravel and sand with the water table located approximately 170m below ground surface beneath the SDA. The purpose of the Large-Scale Aquifer Pumping and Infiltration Test (LPIT) was to mimic the intermittent flood events observed at the SDA and was located approximately 1.43km south of the RWMC within the same geological units.
