The morphology, ultrastructure and mineral element profile in the epidermis of Tea - tree bamboo (Pseudosasa ambilis var. amabilis (McClure) Keng f.) were studied by means of SEM-EDXA in this paper. Results showed that, except for the element of H, the surface of bamboo stem epidermis consists mainly of six elements of carbon, oxygen, silicon, aluminum, sodium and potassium. In the middle or inner layer of bamboo stem eight elements were detected, they are carbon, oxygen, silicon, potassium, aluminum, calcium, iron, sodium, these elements existed in a status of complicated compound materials. The outer layer of the epidermis are highly cuticulayized, there are slighter amount of silicon in the inner layer than that in the outer layer of the epidermis. It was indicated that removal of epidermis, especially middle or inner layer of bamboo stem before cooking for pulping is necessary in order to substantially decrease the amount of mineral elements in the process of bleaching and minerals recycle of effluent treatment.
