Semi-chemical pulps from rice straw were produced using sodium hydroxide, under mild pulping conditions Satisfactory semi-chemical pulps having about 65% yield, were obtained by using 6% NaOH, 6:1 L/g and pulping time 2 hr at 145°C. The produced semi-chemical pulp after digesting was at first deflaked utilizing low kwhr/t followed by beating or refining. Blending of the semi-chemical pulp (60%) with OCC (40 %), on the pilot paper machine, shows improvement in the properties of fluting paper and liner produced. The produced semi-chemical pulp is economically viable with a decrease of cost of 15 US
