High efficient railway material transportation system plays a very important role in the rapid economic development. At present, the method on verifying the security state of the running railway boxcar is to add a lead seal on the boxcar gate. So the existence of a lead seal is a very important indication of the security of the cargo loaded on the boxcar. In order to meet the need of outdoor detection to the boxcar's security, two CCD cameras is used to capture the left and right gate image of each carriage of a train separately. To recognize the boxcar rapidly and accurately from the various trains under complicated illumination conditions, we present a method based on gray variance gradient direction to binary the image that utilizes the texture difference between boxcar gate and other kinds of trains. And then the projection is used to detect the vehicle type and the status of the vehicle gate, and therefore an approximate lead seal located area can be fixed on. Finally, the adaptive threshold method is used to inspect the lead seal in this area. Now, this technology has been applied to a real test.
