Phyto-Extraction of Cesium-contaminated Soil: Evaluation of Cesium Bioaccumulation in the Shoots of Four Plant Species

A green house study was conducted to investigate the potential of four plant species for phytoextration of Cs-contaminated soil. Approximately 4 to 6 folds more Cs was removed from the contaminated soil in shoots of canola (Brassica Napous), than in those of clover (Trifolium Pratense). The greater potential for Cs removal form the soil by canola was associated with both high concentration of Cs in shoots and high shoot biomass production. Approximately 17-37% of the total Cs was removed from the top 15 cm of the soil in shoots of canola plants. Other plants from the monocotyledonous tested group, Sorghum (Sorghum Vulgate) and Panikum (Panicum antidotal), which appear to a moderate degree as weeds. Given appropriate cultivation, they would gain significance as renewable resources with an economic use and would be worth cultivating on contaminated sites as useful plants. Phytoextraction is an emerging technology that should be considered for the remediation of contaminated sites because of its cost effectiveness, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability.
