Safety performance evaluation of selected child safety seats under angled impacts in car-to-car crash tests

Currently, the child safety seats are regulated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No.213 [1]. The compliance tests for the FMVSS 213 include sled tests simulating frontal impacts only. However, real-world accidents usually have some offset or angled component with an associated lateral load component. Only a limited number of studies and tests have been reported in the technical literature. A selected four references provide test data under lateral loads [2-5]. However, there is a need for more detailed test data, where the safety performance of child safety seats under angled impact conditions is evaluated. To enhance the data bank, Biodynamics Engineering, Inc. (BEI) conducted instrumented car-to-car tests to assess the performance of selected child safety seats in angled impacts. One of the two tested child safety seats had a 3-point harness with a soft torso shield and anchor point in the rear, and the other had a 5point harness with an anchor point in the front
