There are two distinct types of pitch-based carbon fiber available commercially. There is the "General Purpose" fiber, which has a tensile strength of up to 700 MPa and modulus of 30 to 60 GPa, and the "High Performance" fiber, which has tensile strength up to 4 GPa and modulus from 180 to 900 GPa. There is also a version of the "High Performance" fiber optimized for thermal conductivity, which, at 1000 Wm~(-1)K~(-1) is 2 1/2 times more conductive than copper. The pitch making and spinning technologies used to make the two types of fiber are quite different. This chapter is concerned only with the high performance fiber.
