A brief discussion of the basics of fiber optics and methods of plastic fiber production is presented. Light attenuation is discussed with reference to specific optical polymers and extrinsic and intrinsic factors, which effect loss in fibers and waveguides. Structure -property relations are used to identify polymers with controlled refractive indexes, transparency in the Near-IR region of the electromagnetic spectrum and increased resistance to high temperatures. This overview also includes information on polymeric cladding and coating systems for glass core materials. The chapter ends with a discussion of important applications for plastic fibers and waveguides.
