We have shown numerically and analyt cally that the Dirac theory can predict superluminal speeds that exceed those predicted by the Schroedinger equation. We have provided a time resolved picture of the tunneling process and proposed a novel tunneling speed V_T. In contrast to all speeds discussed o date, V_T is a function of the position under the barrier and may take a significantly d fferent numerical value. This new concept may be useful in reexamining experimental data obtained recently in tunneling of optical pulses in frustrated total internal reflection, in photonic band gaps or in dielectric media.
