The EFDA Technology Program includes a Materials Development program in the Field: Tritium Breeding and Materials. The Materials Development program concentrates on RAFM steel, SiCSiC composites, Cr and Ti alloys and the nuclear data base. The RAFM steel project is organised into 6 major tasks. The task on irradiation performance has the goal to measure the effects of neutron irradiation up to 30 dpa on properties up to 450°C. The metallurgical characterisation studies ageing effects. The mechanical properties relevant for design form another part of the program. Both compatibility in water and Pb17Li are investigated. The qualification of fabrication processes results will become part of the rules for design, fabrication and inspection. The majority of the effort is put in the reduced activation EUROFER97. This will serve the specification for EUROFER2001 improvements. Increasing attention is given to the development of oxide dispersion strengthened RAFM steels.
