The European Union's New Framework Programme (2002-2006) and Research on Advanced Materials

New materials will play a prominent role in shaping society for the next decade. Research in materials science and related areas such as nanotechnology is therefore a strategic priority for Europe. The European Commission has proposed a new multi-year Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technology development, and demonstration (RTD). Under an initiative to create a European Research Area, this program is expected to provide a powerful tool for maintaining competitiveness and ensuring economic growth based on sustainable development.
