We discuss the influence of phonons on ballistic transport in a two-terminal nanostructure consisting of a spatially uniform semiconductor quantum wire connected to two large classical reservoirs, each in thermal equilibrium with itself. The diagrammatic technique is applied to calculate the phonon-assisted variation of ballistic resistance of such a structure. This approach is compared with another approach based on iteration of the quasiclassical Boltzmann equation. Several physical phenomena are discussed in this context, such as d.c. current produced in a nanostructure by a travelling acoustic wave (acoustoelectric current), Coulomb drag under ballistic conditions in quantum wires and generation of heat by ballistic current-carrying nanostructures.
