Air Pollution Control Experience in C-FBC Boiler of Domestic Anthracite Coal-fired Power Plant in Korea

The consumption of primary energy in Korea has rapidly been increased at an average annual rate of 10% during the one and half decades since 1985. The increase of energy consumption from the second half of the 1980s was results of rapid economic growth and low oil price. The trend of energy consumption increase is expected to continue for a while in accordance with continuing economic growth and elevating living standards. The dependence of fossil energy (oil, coal, and natural gas) in Korea is expected to be still high composing more than 80% by 2020. Presently, more than 97% of energy demand in Korea is supplied by the imports because of the scarcity of indigenous energy resources. Anthracite coal as domestic energy resource is worth little because of low calorific value and high ash content. KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) had 7 domestic coal fired-power plant units at 4 sites in 1997, whose total capacity was 891MW, but those units was so old that they were scheduled to be closed in the near future. KEPCO has made an effort to use domestic energy, so that newly power plants for only domestic coal were constructed with clean coal technology to protect environment. The first C-FBC type Power Plant, Tonghae consists of two 200MW units with Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Technology and new dedusting technology, was constructed, and commissioned in 1998, 1999 respectively. The performance of the power plant in environmental aspect shows better than expected.
