Coupled and Divorced Eutectic Growth in Ternary Alloys

We will present an overview on eutectic growth in ternary alloys with emphasis on two distinct growth modes, coupled and divorced growth. The presentation will focus on unidirectional solidification experiments performed with several alloys from within the Al-Cu-Ag and Al-Mn-Si systems. Three types of instabilities will be discussed ―Al-Cu-Ag: stability of coupling (coupled zone), Al-Cu-Ag: morphological stability of the eutectic interface in coupled growth, and Al-Mn-Si: stability of particle pushing configurations in divorced eutectic growth. The present work is part of the joint research program SETA selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) for the International Space Station.
