This document describes the characteristics of bulk materials as applicable to storage. In the design of silos the characteristics of the product are fundamental in determining: - the geometry of the silo (shape, dimensions, capacity) - type of silo (type of discharge, behaviour at the outlet, operating conditions), - structural stresses. The flow properties of bulk materials are not constant, but depend on various factors, in particular on the compressive stress conditions of the product before and during the flow phases.
