Field emission displays (FEDs) are among several technologies competing to become the principal device in the flat panel display market. The development of low voltage cathodoluminescent (CL) phosphors for this type of device is critical. Recently, oxide phosphors have gained attention as a potential replacement for conventional CL phosphors in low voltage display applications such field emission displays (FEDs). Oxide phosphors are being considered as an alternative since they are more stable in a vacuum environment under irradiation of electrons and emit fewer harmful gases to compromise the integrity of display devices. Thin film cathodoluminescent CL phosphors have a number of potential advantages over powder phosphors, such as better mechanical integrity, better thermal heat sinking, more efficient use of material, and better planarity. Zn_2SiO_4: Mn is a green light emitting phosphor, which has shown promise as a potential CL phosphor . Thin film Zn_2GeO_4: Mn has been evaluated as an electroluminescent phosphor , but its cathodoluminescent properties have not been reported.
