Over the past 35 years a number of studies have been carried out in which electrochemical measurements were used to measure corrosion rates under atmospheric conditions. However, the majority of these measurements were made under relatively aggressive conditions, e.g., high humidity and high contaminant concentration, and the sensitivity of the equipment used to measure current was limited to about 1mA to 1nA. In total, these studies suggested that the workable humidity range for electrochemical corrosion measurements is limited to about 70% relative humidity (RH) and higher. Our goal over the past few years has been to determine if meaningful electrochemical measurements can be made at lower humidity.
