The threatened security of the Nation arising from the events of September 11 and the deaths that followed the distribution of anthrax spores through the mail marked the urgency for rapid environmental monitoring for biological agents. The Nation's resources, the air we breathe, the agricultural products we eat, the mass transport system we use, and the water we drink are the most vulnerable targets. Water is an obvious target for massive effect, but is very difficult to monitor because of the widespread usage, the time it takes, and the distance it travels from the treatment facility to the consumer. For these reasons, the development of a rapid, accurate, and on-site drinking water monitoring system is necessary. Our ultimate goal in this research is to provide a monitoring device for fast analysis, low limit of detection, and high accuracy to prevent false negatives and positives and maintain confidence in the monitoring system.
