Molds are the basic building block in all plastic molding operations, no matter what the molding process. Injection, Compression, Transfer, be it Thermoplastic or Thermoset; they all require molds to manufacture parts. The attraction of manufacturing to the molding operation is that once the mold is made, it produces nearly finished parts ready for assembly. Cost of the mold is the major drawback to the molding process. The cost of some molds sometimes exceeds the cost of the molding press itself. Mold maintenance is all about extending the useful life of the mold. With proper care and maintenance, the mold can last 20 million shots, depending on the material being molded. But remember, even with proper care, the mold will eventually wear out, and will need replacing.
