This paper has sought to give a brief update on the current operational reliability of the Class 170 fleets operating on Midland Mainline and Central Trains. It is clear that improvements in reliability are required. The cost of unreliability is now more widely understood within the industry as a whole, and by operational maintainers in particular, and the cost benefits of improved reliability can be clearly demonstrated. However, to achieve a step change in the Class 170 reliability, not only will investment be required to develop engineering modifications to address the areas outlined above, but the challenge of implementing these improvements will have to be met alongside the pressures of increased availability to meet growing passenger demand.
