Electricity consumers traditionally partake in demand side "load-shaping" initiatives if these initiatives make economical sense on their purchase agreements that depend on the tariffing arrangements with their distribution companies. However, the current access to high-speed information and networking technology can potentially enable additional total-system efficiency increases that may be of value to the national grid operator where these benefits would then be re-distributed to participants and could be managed and distributed in 'real-time'.
