Interface design is an important issue in the human-machine systems. The principles of interface design are studied in this paper. Specifically, Ecological Interface Design (EID), which is regarded as being most powerful, is re-examined. Some problems with EID are identified. A new principle for human-machine interface design called Function Behavior State (FBS) is proposed. A comparative study for ETD and FBS is performed on a simulated process plant system. The subjects operate the systems (one based on EID and the other on FBS). Measuring of subject's eye behaviors, such as the pupil diameter and eye fixation on the displays, is conducted using an eyegaze system.
