Mechanical alloying has been used extensively to produce non-equilibrium microstructure of nanocrystalline and/or amorphous phases. It involves high energy ball-milling of the powder materials which undergo repeat deformation, fracture and welding processes. This technique has been applied to a range of metals, semiconductors and ceramics. Recently, mechanical alloying has been applied to the production of amorphous alloy powders with a large supercooled liquid region. These powders have the potential to be consolidated into bulk form without crystallisation. The replacement of Fe with Ni in Fe{sub}70Zr{sub}10B{sub}20 alloys during mechanical alloying has accelerated the amorphization process and enhanced the thermal stability of the amorphous structure in the powder. Furthermore, the crystallisation reaction path of the FeNiZrB alloys was found to vary with Ni content. This paper presents detailed results on the role of Ni in the formation and crystallization of mechanically alloyed amorphous Fe{sub}(70-x)Ni{sub}xZr{sub}10B{sub}20 (x= 7-28 at.%) powders.
