For arbitrary shell structures with finite rotations and large strains a finite element formulation is achieved by means of a higher order kinematic assumption, by using hierarchical as well as non-hierarchical interpolation functions and by constructing the partial derivatives involved in the linearized variational formulation via the analytical tool of MATHEMATICA. The reference shell configuration is considered in an exact form by means of algorithms applicable to various practically relevant cases such as shells with geometry intersections. The formulation presented substantially reduces the well-known locking phenomena of low-order finite element formulations and provides as essential advantage the optional selection of the kinematic assumption, interpolation polynomials and particularly hyperelastic constitutive laws.
