Electrochemical arylation of aromatic aldehydes using a stainless steel sacrificial anode in the presence of nickel catalysts affords the corresponding alcohols in moderate to good yields. Chromium and nickel salts are formed in situ by oxidation of the stainless steel rod during a pr-electrolysis in 7 and 3% respectively, and the electrolysis is then run with an iron rod. The process has also been applied to the addition of vinyl halide, allylacetate, or α-chloroester to aromatic aldehydes.
