There has been a tremendous interest in the use of flame retardants to improve the thermal stability and fire performance of epoxy resins. The improved flame retardancy seen with most flame retardant additives does not only depend on their thermal stability but also on their decomposition rate, char formation rate and yield.4 Modeling the kinetics of mass loss in thermogravimetric experiments provides insights into the thermal degradation mechanisms of flame- retarded resins.
