The tendency of fine dispersions of clays in polymer matrices to enhance mechanical properties, flame retardance, and barrier properties, particularly at elevated temperature, is a phenomenon that has elicited extensive research in the field of polymer/layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSs). Although progress with traditional PLSs has led to the beginnings of significant commercial success, a number of hurdles remain in place that impede the realization of their full potential. Most significantly, the challenge of obtaining good dispersion and controlling the spatial and orientational particle distribution of the silicates within the polymer matrix has precluded a thorough understanding of the relationships between the formulation, processing, morphology, and physical properties.
