Ionomers are polymers having small numbers of the ionic groups attached directly to the backbones or as pendant groups attached to the side chains. Since last three decades, many research groups have extensively studied the mechanical properties, morphology and spectroscopy of the ionomers by varying a number of factors such as type, size, position and degree of neutralization of functional repeat units (i.e. ionic groups), type of additives, neutralizing agents and plasticizers, and variation in other experimental conditions. However, the effect of aliphatic dibasic salt (acid) additives on the mechanical properties and morphology of polystyrene-based ionomers is not well known. Here, we will show the effect of the type of the sodium salt of aliphatic dibasic acids (SDAs) and their roles on the morphology and dynamic mechanical properties of the poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) ionomers.
