Carbon black, talc and silica are inexpensive filler materials that are used on a commercial scale to improve or modify the properties of a variety of polymers. The effect a filler material has on mechanical properties is easily apparent in rubber tires. The first pneumatic tires were made from crosslinked rubber but, unlike their modern counterparts, they did not contain any fillers, which even at low speed limited their service range to just a few thousand miles. The addition of up to 50% of carbon black improves the abrasion resistance of the rubber tire tremendously. Strong secondary and primary covalent bonds between the rubber and carbon black account for the reinforcing ability of the carbon black filler observed in modern tires.
