Self-Assembly of an Amphiphilic Random Polymer Bearing Donor–Acceptor Type Azo Chromophores

Polymers bearing donor-acceptor type azo chromophores show a interesting property of the photoinduced dichroism, which are promising in the applications such as reversible optical data storage, optical-switching and sensors. The photoresponsive azo materials with nano-/micrometer dimensions can be prepared through self- assembly methods such as electrostatic layer-by-layer (ELBL) deposition and hydrophilic-and-hydrophobic association in selective solvents. Besides the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions generally observed in ELBL multilayers and polymer colloids, there is a unique type chromophoric aggregation existing between conjugated planar structures. In our previous research, the self-assembly of amphiphilic azo polymers has been investigated in THF-H2O media. However, the study on photoresponsive colloidal spheres is still in the early stage. A understanding of the self-assembly behaviors of amphiphilic azo polymers in other selective media and the chromophoric aggregation status in those polymeric colloids is required.
