The functionalization of nanotube surfaces by using amphiphilic molecules has been recognized as one of the most useful approaches to improve the dispersion of SWNTs in aqueous media. Using this approach, the solubility of SWNTs can be greatly enhanced by anchoring of hydrophobic segments on the surface of SWNTs, where hydrophilic segments are orientated toward the aqueous phase. Recently, several groups reported on the solubilization of SWNTs in water using amphiphilic building blocks such as block copolymers, lipids, and surfactants.
