Ultraviolet (UV) curable coatings are typically VOC-free systems that form hard, solvent resistant coatings. Rapid cure at ambient temperatures permits increased line speed, reduced energy consumption, and lower space requirements. UV coatings and thin films are employed in protecting and decorating diverse substrates such as computer chips, heat sensitive substrates such as paper and wood products, optical fibers, and automobile parts. Thiol-ene UV curable systems provide similar attributes as conventional UV technology with the added advantage of no inhibition by moisture and oxygen. Due to their unique curing mechanism, the coating properties can be tailored through the appropriate selection of reagent structure, functionality, and stoichiometry. Thiol-ene systems lack toxicity, although lower molecular weight thiols typically possess unpleasant odors.
